In France and the USA state schools are required to be strictly secular, with no religious instruction, acts of worship or displays of religious faith permitted. In the UK faith schools receive government funding and acts of religious worship are permitted in all state schools. The National Union of Teachers has recently suggested that imams, rabbis, priests or other religious officials should be allowed to go into state schools to teach religion to children of their faiths. But some people believe that having separate faith schools or dealing with faith in schools might be divisive. Is it still appropriate to provide religious instruction or acts of worship in British schools?
