FROM THE SUNDAY EXPRESS
Teachers have been told to bar pupils from wearing crucifixes, but permit Muslim, Sikh & Hindu jewellery it was claimed last night.
Christian symbols were not included among the “exceptional “items that should be allowed despite a general ban on jewellery introduced by Croydon Council in London.
Pupils can therefore be allowed to wear a Hindu cotton bracelet called a rakhi, a Sikh steel bracelet named a Kara and a Muslim locket known as a taweez
The lawyers Christian Fellowship condemned the “double standard” and Shadow Education Sec David Willetts said “I don’t think people who write these reports understand how much resentment they generate by their clumsy attempts to respect every religion other than Christianity”
Croydon Council spokesman insisted the “guidance was purely advisory” and was likely to be changed
